Looking After Me Program (LAMP) education packages have been developed to provide information about relationship and sexuality education for people with disability. The topics are designed to meet the needs of children, young people and adults with disability in a way that supplements education provided by families, schools, and service providers.

In addition to LAMP, True offers group education sessions for people with disability, school programs, and professional development training for teachers and other community organisations.

LAMP Packages include:

  • 45 minute initial appointment with the person with disability to determine individual education wants/needs. Support person to attend this meeting (eg. parent, carer, support worker, youth workers, service provider).
  • This is followed by 3 or 5 one-hour education sessions. All packages must be completed within a four month time-frame from commencement. All sessions can be scheduled on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
  • Take-home brochures and resources to support the education sessions held with True.

LAMP education uses visual resources, simple language and interactive activities to proactively teach people with disability about topics such as bodies, growing up, relationships and personal safety, age-appropriately. It does not provide counselling. A support person can continue conversations and learning following the Looking after me program.*

See our FAQ page for more information and details.

*Without a consistent and an appropriate support person (that the person with disability is happy with), Looking after me sessions may not go ahead.

Access

Face to face meetings and sessions are held in meeting rooms at True Relationships & Reproductive Health. During times of high bookings there may be delays for commencement of this service.

Online sessions will be conducted using Zoom, which is a secure, web browser-based service. The participant will be provided with an individual link for each session, which will only be shared with them. No equipment or special software is required.

Participants will just need to be able to access a secure and stable internet connection and a laptop, PC, or tablet for the sessions with a camera, speaker, and microphone function. They will also need a current email address to have the meeting link sent to join the sessions. Having a trusted adult to support the participant throughout each session is still a pre-requisite if they are a child, or an adult requiring support.

Sessions are for education purposes

Education is provided during LAMP sessions. LAMP does not provide counselling and is not a crisis response service or an investigative service for sexual assault. If you reasonably suspect that a child is experiencing sexual abuse contact the Police 000 or Dept of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs. Further, if you are an adult experiencing sexual abuse or relationship violence, (or you support an adult with disability experiencing this) call 1800 RESPECT or visit the 1800 RESPECT website.

Our commitment

True is committed to supporting people with disability to have the choice and control that will help them to achieve their goals, including participating in education. LAMP is person-centred and is only facilitated with the participant’s consent to education. Prior to registering for Looking after me, please talk to the person with disability about the program and their willingness to participate.

True complies with the NDIS Code of Conduct in regards to confidentiality and person-centred approach. Once LAMP is booked there will be an initial meeting with the participant (and support person) to obtain consent to participate and discuss the parameters of information sharing.

True and the NDIS

As a leading provider of relationships and reproductive health education for people with disabilities, we look forward to supporting NDIS participants to include True’s education programs in their NDIS Plan.

True is able to provide NDIS funded education services to people who are partially or wholly self-managed NDIS participants (that is, their funding is not exclusively managed by the NDIA). For participants using a registered plan manager, it may be possible to access the services of non-registered providers such as True.

Who is the Looking After Me Program package suitable for?

LAMP packages use visual resources and interactive activities. They can be adapted to meet a range of needs; however they are best suited for individuals with an intellectual disability or with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The approach will be tailored based on an individual’s age and abilities and this can be discussed at the initial meeting.

Does the person with a disability need to consent to the education?

True strongly advocates that the person is informed and provides their consent. It is important that the young person or adult is aware that a booking is being made and that they understand the purpose of participating in LAMP.

Why does True ask for a support person to attend the session with the young person or adult?

True invites parents, carers, or service providers to be a part of the education process. If there is a support person present, there is then opportunity to continue the education process after the program is completed. It is very helpful for the person to have someone to provide ongoing clarification and follow up at home or in other settings.

Who can be a support person?

A family member, good friend or service provider who has a positive, ongoing relationship with the person can be a support person. It is important that the person feels comfortable with whoever is attending the sessions with them. It is preferable that the same person accompanies the person for the duration of the program.

Is it ok for someone to attend alone?

In some circumstances this will be appropriate. This can be negotiated at the initial meeting.

How long are the sessions?

The initial meeting with a parent/carer or a service provider lasts for 45 minutes. LAMP sessions are 1 hour each.

Do we have to come every week?

Looking after me sessions can be scheduled to occur at weekly or fortnightly intervals. This time frame enables the delivery of the education to flow and provides opportunity for reinforcing learning at each session.

How long do we have to complete the package?

Sessions for each package need to be booked and attended within a 4 month time frame. This time frame enables the delivery of the education to flow and provides opportunity for reinforcing learning at each session.

We’re not sure which package to choose. Can I talk to someone about it?

Of course, please call 07 3250 0240 and we can help you.

Can we swap the topics between the packages?

Unfortunately no, the topics in each of the packages have been selected based on True’s experience of delivering relationships and sexuality education for people with disability.

The package that provides the most flexible approach is the 6-session package.

What if we want to have some extra sessions? How much will they cost?

Extra sessions can be added to your package. Session topics can be chosen from the existing topics within the package options. Each additional session is $225 +GST and can be negotiated at the initial meeting or at any time during the delivery of the sessions.

What if we need to cancel or reschedule? How much notice do I need to provide?

See the cancellation and rescheduling policy below.

How will True keep information confidential?

Read True's Privacy policy to learn more.

Will we get resources to take home?

Yes, you will be able to take away all the work that has been completed during the sessions. You may also be provided with extra visual resources to support learning between sessions. True's online shop also has a selection of useful resources available for purchase.

Is this service eligible for rebates from private health funds or Medicare?

No, this is not a rebated service.
